3D-Coat 3.1 updates thread

Hmm, I've just stumbled across something that

may be causing some confusion with this.

Not sure if it's a bug or by design, but Depth Limit

only works in perspective view.

In Orthographic projection it always slices all

the way through; no matter what tool you use.

Personally I'd like it to work in Ortho too.

Problem exporting normal maps.

Yeah that is pretty much how I felt. But, I sat on it for a few days and finally decided that its worth the trade off we now have with the depth limit changes. I like having both, it's just a matter of getting used to it, lol.

The thing is if it were "fixed" you'd still have the depth limit, so everyone wins, you just have to enable it with the checkbox. Currently with most tools the checkbox (and slider) do nothing, I made a little video to demonstrate, you can see every setting gives the same results:

http://screencast.com/t/MzhlOWZhY

I don't understand how this is a good thing while only 2 or 3 tools work the correct way.

It has to be even less than 1 mil.

One of the main reasons why Zb and MB users want subdivision levels is to go back to use move brush with big radius to make global tweaking of character's form.

(tweak shoulder, head, pose arms differently ect while not destroying the details that are sculpted at the higher multimillion levels).

1 million is too much to use move brush comfortably with big radius.

(testing with brush as big as half a torso will help you find best start level).

It has to be 50000-300000 range.

:yahoo: Masterplan!

Ps:If you implement this idea + direct import of polygon meshes with Uvs in surface mode,it would be a frightening selling point.

I use zbrush because it allow me to import a cage model, sculpt it, then, generate a new cage (and a displacement map), with the same vertice order. I use this workflow since Zbrush 2 was released, in 2004.

I'm Not a 100% sure. maybe 90% but version 3.1.22. feels slower. Not as much on my intel nvida system. But on my amd ati system when painting/sculpturing voxels are slow. the brushes move very slow like lag.

It's because of your Nvidia video card. Currently 3DC supports CUDA and not OpenCL (yet). So Nvidia boxes get better performance. I have an AMD/Nvidia box and it screams.

It seems to me that OpenCL support would be better for the overall 3d-coat community because it should in theory be an open standard supported by multiple graphic cards and operating systems. i work on a Mac with an Nvida 8800 gt but at the current time Andrew has no 3d-coat for the mac with Cuda support. I hope that development for OpenCL could progress within 3d-coat.

Updates to 3.1.23

Changes:

- Every volume will be merged to the separate layer while merging from voxels to per-pixel. It gives much better control over baked color.

- Primitives cage can be tweaked using not only points but edges and faces too.

- CTRL can be used to move primitive face along it's normal. I have also add detailed description how to use primitives tool.

- fixed possible normalmap corruption during export if there are several normalmap layers or depth+normalmap on the object (Tinker's issue).

- Buttons "Material" and "Object" will work properly in Fill by Freeze mode in Fill tool (Paint tab)

- Muscle tools problems solved - (1) it was making thing before releasing the pen, (2) - jerky motion at low pen pressure

- All clutters in Pict tool (paint tab) fixed - upside-down picture, absent save.

- All picking layer/color/specularity/depth promlems mentioned by Taros solved ( http://bit.ly/8ER8xo )

Fantastic! :) Thanx for incredible work again!

Primitives are very cool to work with.

OpenCL is a brand new standard...and it's easier said than done, especially when he's already sunk a lot of work into supporting CUDA. I'd much rather Andrew continue working on improving the tools within the program and squash bugs...than halt all of that in order to placate a few that knew upfront there was no support for their card or platform.

3.1.23 (Vista 64 bit, non cuda)

I wasn't sure what the new layer merging feature was and so I tried 'Quadrangulating for per pixel painting' a couple of basic voxels using default settings. I've attached the result:

I tried it and it works superb.

Here is how to test with quadrangulation.

-Create two layers with primitives or whatever.

-Clone those 2 layers.

-Merge those 2 layers.

-Quadrangulate that result.

-Delete the merged voxel layer.

-Set 2 different shaders to the 2 remaining voxel layers.

-In retopo menu using previously quadrangulated mesh select "merge for perpixel with normal map".

:) Now after baking in paint room the 2 shaders are on different color layers!

You call that working superb? :nea:

I think we're supposed to be able to merge two seperate volumes with their own layer into the same scene. Your method only gives a single volume.

I think I've found a solution though - after merging the first volume I simply went back into Retopo and cleared out the retopo mesh before merging the second volume. Now in Paint mode I've got two totally separate objects and each has its own layers.

Thanks for your suggestions though, it opens the door for other possibilities. 8)

Edit:

What's odd is that when I export the object it exports both meshes and yet only exports a single color image and normal map for just one of the meshes. The other set of images are still in 3D Coat. I must admit though - this is a problem I've been aware of for some time and just didn't bother to mention it.

What you are talking about have nothing to do about what has just been implemented.

Andrew added "per volume" masking in the baking process, that's all. as requested here http://www.3d-coat.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=4644.

He said separate layer(as in color layer) in didnt said they would be merged to separate objects.

Its not "my method".

Its just description on how to use what has just been implemented.

Well if that is what he's just implemented then I doubt that anybody but Artman would ever know the ability existed. It's just way to obscure and convoluted to be noticeable. But no worries.. If it makes Artman happy then we're all happy... ;)

If someone uses workflow Voxels->retopo->paint this feature is real time saver if you suppose that 60% of texturing is made using voxels and left 40% should be done manually.

This feature allows you to tweak every layer separately to reach most precise color for example.

My post was about downloading the latest update as well as showing my appreciation to Andrew for said update, as opposed to participating in the sparks of a flame war..

Aww I know, Phil. I was joking..

ps - looks like somebody out there is mopping up the thread. :)
